2017 Highlights

Vintage Music Takes Center Stage

No vintage-themed weekend is complete without the right music, and this year’s Galveston Island Beach Revue features two of the nation’s best period-inspired bands performing throughout the weekend. Returning from last year’s acclaimed performance is Dandy Wellington & His Band from New York City. In addition, Dallas’ Matt Tolentino Band is bringing their signature sound to this year’s event. Wellington is performing Friday at Galvez Bar & Grill, 6:30-8:15pm and Saturday at the Revue at 4pm and 7pm. Tolentino is scheduled Saturday at the Revue, 2-4pm and Sunday, 11am-1pm at the Hotel Galvez & Spa’s® Sunday Brunch.

Friday Night Revue Prevue At Hotel Galvez & Spa®

Galveston’s iconic “Queen of the Gulf,” Hotel Galvez & Spa®, 2024 Seawall Blvd., opens its doors for a special night of live music, craft beer, speak-easy inspired cocktails, and more, as part of a Friday Night Revue Prevue. Galvez Bar & Grill is featuring New York City’s Dandy Wellington & His Band, 6-9pm. The Prevue also offers the public’s first introduction to the 2017 Bathing Beauty contestants. Admission is free, and vintage attire is encouraged.

Bathing Beauties Contest

Always a crowd favorite, the weekend’s main event is the Bathing Beauties Contest, held at Beach Central, 2102 Seawall Blvd., on Saturday, 5-7pm. Retro swimwear is chic and vintage is king as contestants from across the country catwalk across Galveston’s historic shoreline modeling vintage and vintage inspired swimwear and accessories that echo the “good ole days” of Galveston’s summertime history. Classic pinup styles, the likes that Esther Williams, Marilyn Monroe, and Bettie Page made famous, will heat up the beaches as 40 contestants vie for cash prizes and top honors.

Classic Car and Vintage Trailer Show

Hot rods, rat rods, vintage trailers, and more are lining up to take part in the Galveston Island Beach Hot Rod + Classic Car and Vintage Trailer show on Saturday, 2-4pm, at Beach Central, 2102 Seawall Blvd. Admission is free for the general public to view the cars and is part of a full day of vintage-inspired programming. Car and trailer owners can register online at gavestonbeachrevue.com. Registration is limited to cars from 1975 or older.

Sunday Brunch And Baseball

Sunday Brunch at Hotel Galvez & Spa® is widely known as a “can’t-miss” experience in Galveston. For this year’s Beach Revue, Brunch takes a step back in time with the Matt Tolentino Band. Enjoy vintage music with contemporary fare on your Sunday, 11am-2pm. Advance reservations are recommended and available by calling (409)765-7721 or via Open Table.

As the weekend comes to a close the public is invited to a special vintage baseball game played between the Gulf Coast Sugar and Texas Playboys from 2-4pm, at Hooper Field, 3110 83rd St. This sandlot-inspired game features two of Texas’ most seasoned unorganized league teams. Admission is free.

“Seawall Chronicles” Book Signing

The Galveston Island Beach Revue takes place just a few feet from it’s original location on Galveston’s historic Seawall. One of the islands most iconic structures, the Seawall history is a key piece of Galveston’s history. Local author, and 2017 bathing beauties contest judge, Kimber Fountain, will be signing copies of her debut book, Galveston Seawall Chronicles, from 3-4 p.m. on Saturday, May 20th at the Beach Revue merchandise booth.

Along Galveston’s Gulf Coast runs a seventeen-foot-high, ten-mile-long protective barrier—a response to the nation’s all-time deadliest natural disaster. The seawall remains a stoic protector more than a century later, shielding the island from much more than physical destruction. As the foundation of Seawall Boulevard, this structure created an entirely new tourism industry that buoyed the city’s economy through war, the Great Depression, and hurricanes. Adapting to the cultural trends and political movements that defined the past century, the seawall represents the unbreakable spirit of Galveston’s resilient population and provides a fascinating glimpse into bygone times.

About The Galveston Island Beach Revue

Dubbed the “Pageant of Pulchritude” by C.E. Barfield, Galveston’s Bathing Beauties Contest began in the summer of 1920
and marked the kick-off for tourist season each year. By 1928, the event, which had morphed into the “bathing girl revue,” had become so popular the Island’s population was said to have tripled during the event weekend. These island pageants were the beginning of what we know today as the Miss Universe Pageant. The famed Galveston Bathing Beauties pageants ended in 1932 due in part to the Great Depression and were resurrected in 2009.
