The Galveston Arts Center (GAC) announces the 2017 “Summer Art” program for kids beginning Friday, June 9th. Taught by a team of university-trained artists and licensed art teachers, the program schedule covers an impressive array of visual art topics including drawing, painting, printmaking, photography/film, textiles, bookmaking, portraits, comics, ceramics, and several kinds of sculpture.

Friday morning classes run every week through August 12th (ten weeks) and are offered for ages 5-8 from 9-10am ($15 per class,) and ages 9-12 from 10:30am-12 noon ($20 per class.) Whole-summer packages are available at a discount (10 classes for the price of 8). All materials are included.

Based on last year’s success, GAC will also offer several five-day Art Camps for $150 (all materials included.)

9-14 year olds can take Stop-motion Film camp from June 19th-23rd, and Pop-up Book camp from July 10th-14th.

7-14 years olds can take Sculpture camp from June 26th-30th and Ceramics camp from July 17th-21st.

Art Camps are team-taught and designed to be like mini-courses, allowing students to delve more deeply into a specific project over five afternoons. All camps are Monday-Friday 1-4pm.

All classes and camps are held at the Galveston Arts Center’s recently remodeled, ADA-accessible facility on the corner of Strand and 22nd Street.  The spacious studio/classroom is a bright, beautiful space with high ceilings and plenty of natural light, outfitted with all the requisite equipment and supplies.

Unique among summer art programs in Galveston, “Summer Art” students have the benefit of GAC’s three on-site galleries showcasing rotating exhibitions by contemporary artists. Exposure to professional work being made today places the students’ summer art-making experience within the context of the broader art world and provides a tangible source of inspiration, making Galveston Arts Center a smart choice of setting for any young artists’ creative pursuits.

The complete, detailed schedule for classes and camps along with online registration can be found at Parents can also register by phone or in-person at GAC. Pre-registration is required.
