July 28th, August 3rd, August 24th, September 7th, September 28th, October 5th, November 2nd, December 7th (4-7pm): Kayak Excursions – Sea Star Base Galveston offers Kayak Excursions year round. A gentle three mile paddle through the calm waters of Offatt’s Bayou sets the kayaker on the Central Flyway, a migratory bird path that extends from Alaska to South America and offers the opportunity to see and photograph birds unlike any other location on the Gulf Coast. The fee is $35 per person and available by reservations at ssbgalveston.org or by calling (409)572-2560. They also have Private Kayaking Excursions available. Call for details.
There’s still a few summer camps with openings. These are open to anyone with any skill level.
Learn-to-Swim classes, taught through the American Red Cross, are being offered this summer. Session 3 is July 2nd-13th, Session 4 is July 16th-27th, and Session 5 is July 30th-August 10th. Sea Star Doolin Maritime Camp
A residential camp experience, Sea Star Doolin Maritime Camp is July 29th-August 3rd, and will introduce students to jobs that are land and sea oriented through site visits, one-on-one conversations with professionals, and a curriculum that educates on the numerous jobs, job qualifications, and salary snapshots in the maritime industry. Sea Star Doolin Maritime Camp is a weeklong residential camp. Limited spaces available, call for details.
Summer Sail Camp
What could be more fun than sailing all summer? Sail Camp is for beginners and experienced students. Each student will review sailing concepts and terminology for communicating on the water. After familiarization and land drills, campers take to the boats for sailing. Learn navigation, how to tie knots, and meteorology, as well as swimming, treasure hunts, kayaking, cruises, and lots more. Summer Sail Camps are offered for two age groups: 6-11 years old (all classes are full) and 11-16 years old (August 6th-10th). Camps are 9am-5pm each day and cost $175 for members and $300 for non-members.
Sea Star Medical Camp
Sea Star Base Galveston, in collaboration with UTMB Health, is now accepting registration for Sea Star Medical Camp July 15th-21st. This camp is open to students that are rising to 7th & 8th grades. This is a new and innovative residential camp where students will learn about careers in the medical field through field trips. Courses include CPR, AED, First Aid, Wilderness First Aid, and site tours to UTMB Health where students will visit the Galveston National Laboratory, UTMB Moody Medical Library, Maker Health Space at UTMB, International Biosafety Training Center, and a tour of Old Red, the original Medical Branch. Student lodging is provided.
“All Hands on Deck” Liveaboard BaySmart Express Camp
Sailing weekly through August 10th is the unique “All Hands On Deck, Liveaboard Baysmart Express” Camp. You can actively join in the duties of a professional crew as you live and learn aboard the USCG Inspected M/V Baysmart Express. The cruise will be from Galveston Bay to Corpus Christi and back. This is for all ages – youth ages 14-18 and adults. The cost is all inclusive, $1345 per person.
