May 19th: Meet a Mariner Day * Summer Camps

Everything is Ready for Summer Fun at Sea Scout Base

Sea Star Base Galveston is a high adventure marine and maritime destination offering aquatic education programs that instill lifetime leadership, teamwork skills and independence in body, mind and spirit. June 1st, June 30th, July 6th, July 28thm August 3rd, August 24th, September 7th, September 28th, October 5th, November 2nd, December 7th (4-7pm) – Kayak Excursions – Sea Star Base Galveston offers Kayak Excursions year round. A gentle three mile paddle through the calm waters of Offatt’s Bayou sets the kayaker on the Central Flyway, a migratory bird path that extends from Alaska to South America and offers the opportunity to see and photograph birds unlike any other location on the Gulf Coast. In addition, participants will experience and explore the wetlands from a personal perspective. The fee is $35 per person and available by reservations only at ssbgalveston.org or by calling (409)572-2560.

May 19th (10am-3pm)- Meet a Mariner Day – In conjunction with National Maritime Day, Meet a Mariner Day will feature boat tours, educational exhibits, and the opportunity to meet professional mariners, tour vessels and learn about maritime careers. Activities throughout the day will include a scavenger hunt and a special appearance by NASA Astronaut Michael R. Barrett at 12 noon in the Commodore Room, 5th floor. National Maritime Day is observed on May 22nd, the date that the American steamship Savannah sailed from the United States to England. This event marked the first successful crossing of the Atlantic Ocean using steam propulsion. On May 20, 1933, Congress declared May 22nd as National Maritime Day. A family friendly event, there is no fee to attend. Food and refreshments will be available for purchase and tours of Sea Star Base Galveston are available. Complimentary parking and overflow shuttle.

June 2nd – Land Sea Adaptive Sports Challenge – Adaptive athletes compete in sports including sailing, basketball, water skiing and tennis at this city wide event. All participants are welcome. There is no fee to play or attend. Venues that will hold this fun event are Sea Star Base Offatt’s Bayou, Moody Gardens, and tennis and basketball courts around town. Summer Camps

Summer Sail Camp

What could be more fun that sailing all summer? Sail Camp is for beginners and experienced students.

Each student will begin with a safety check including swimming evaluations and capsizing drills and after checking out, they will review sailing concepts and terminology for communicating on the water. After familiarization and land drills, campers take to the boats for sailing. Learn navigation, how to tie knots and meteorology, as well as swimming, treasure hunts, kayaking, cruises and lots more.

Summer Sail Camps are offered for two age groups: 6-11 years old (June 4th-8th, June 18th-22nd, July 30th-August 3rd, August 12th-17th) and 11-16 years old (June 11th-15th, June 25th-29th, August 6th-10th, August 20th-24th). Camps are 9am-5pm per day. Camps are $175 for members and $300 for non-members.

Sea Star Doolin Maritime Camp

It’s time to register for camp! A residential camp experience, Sea Star Maritime Camp is July 29th-August 3rd, and will introduce students to jobs that are land and sea oriented through site visits, one on one conversations with professionals, and a curriculum that educates on the numerous jobs, job qualifications, and salaries snapshot in the maritime industry. Sea Star Maritime Camp is a weeklong residential camp that provides lodging, meals, daily camaraderie, education and experience. Limited spaces available, call for details.

Live Aboard BaySmart Camp

Sailing weekly June 4th-August 10th is the unique “All Hands On Deck, Live Aboard Baysmart Express” Camp. The innovative program offers a unique environment to learn shipboard operations and explore the waterways of the Texas Gulf Coast. You can actively join in the duties of a professional crew as you live and learn aboard the USCG Inspected M/V Baysmart Express. The cruise will be from Galveston Bay to Corpus Christi and back. This is for all ages – youth ages 14-18 and adults. Cost is all inclusive, $1345 per person.

Sea Star Medical Camp

Sea Star Base Galveston, in collaboration with UTMB Health, is now accepting registration for Medical Camp, July 15th-21st. Camp is open to students rising 7th & 8th grades. A new and innovative residential camp, students will learn about careers and pathways in the medical field. In addition to field trips, courses include CPR, AED, First Aid, Wilderness First Aid and site tours to UTMB Health where students will visit the Galveston National Laboratory, UTMB Moody Medical Library, Maker Health Space at UTMB, International Biosafety Training Center, and a tour of Old Red, the original Medical Branch. Student lodging is provided.

Other Camps

Two other camps are scheduled: Texas Coastal Brigade Camp (July 16th-21st) and Maritime Pathways Camp (July 29th-August 3rd). These are still forming, go to ssbgalveston.org for more info.
