The Grand Kids Festival to be held Saturday, April 7th

Celebrate with The Grand April 7th – a day filled with non-stop performances and art activities at the 23rd Annual Grand Kids Festival 10am-5pm, located on Postoffice Street in Galveston’s historic downtown Cultural Arts District between 20th and 23rd St.

Admission to the festival, inflatables, pony rides, and a variety of additional activities are free to the public.

Presented by The Grand 1894 Opera House, the Festival is recognized as one of the Gulf Coast region’s premier family spring events and is designed as an avenue to introduce children and their families to the arts. The festival offers live entertainment on four outdoor stages, as well as on The Grand’s stage indoors, and features over 40 activity booths – each showcasing a variety of unique, hands-on activities for children and their families to enjoy.

This year, there will be a Storytelling Tent. This intimate performance tent offers a variety of Storytellers, from “Mother Goose” to readings by local children’s authors – complete with milk and cookies – perfect for storytime!

The Grand Kids Festival will also present performances by Texas Commission on the Arts touring roster artists, as well as performances by area school groups and regional artists on outdoor stages.

Banner Design Contest is open to students in grades K-8.​ The 2018 Banner Contest theme is “Pirates!” Create your banner design showing your favorite pirate design (pirate flags, ships, treasure chest and more).

A highlight of the entertainment offered each year is a musical adaptation presented by Missoula Children’s Theatre as part of a theatre residency. Presenting “Treasure Island” this year, Missoula Children’s Theatre works with a cast of 50 area students for a week prior to the Festival and then presents them in two performances on The Grand’s historic stage. An open audition will be held on Monday, April 2nd. Those auditioning should arrive at 4:30pm and plan to stay for the full two hours. Some students cast in the show will be asked to stay for a rehearsal immediately following the audition.

New this year is Kupira Marimba, a high-energy joyful music is a foot stomping, heart pounding, hand clapping experience for the whole family.

Andyroo And The Andyrooniverse is the producer/singer/songwriter behind Andyroo and the Andyrooniverse. He has been a featured performer on Radio Disney AM 1590. Andrew has delighted kids of all ages at the Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History, and more.

Storyteller Sue Kuentz, and Hide Out Theatre will perform improv shows.

Donovan And Rebecca will perform acrobatics.

Kurt Gillins Steel Drum Group, The Magic Of Bubbles With Austin’s Bubble Man, Flower Crowns Artisan tent are new this year as well.

Returning are crowd favorites United Freestyle Stunt Team, Bits ‘n’ Pieces Puppet Theatre will present “Aesop’s Fable – The Dinosaur And The Ant,” Marsha’s Petting Zoo & Pony Rides, TCA Touring Artist Toni Simmons and Artist Dru Woods, Critterman, Razz Ma Tazz, Tipi Tellers, and the Magic Twists Balloon Artist.
