You can even take a moment to chill out on the ice with a festive drink inside the Shivers Ice Bar that has transformed into a log cabin decked out for the holidays where you can cozy up to a cool fireplace made completely of ice!

Resiliency and a heart for preservation have helped make Galveston one of the most well-known historic towns on the Gulf Coast. The strength, ingenuity and progress of Galvestonians in the aftermath of the 1900 Storm are captured within the walls of numerous museums on the Island. On Jan. 25 – 26, 2020, these museums will offer incentives for history buffs to take a glimpse into the island’s storied past.

During Museum Day, visitors can learn about Galveston’s place as one of the wealthiest cities in the United States during the late 1800s, the powerful families who helped build the city, Galveston’s significance to immigration in the region, and the importance of the industries that keep Galveston a thriving coastal city and tourism destination today.

Museum Day brings together several local museums for two days of free and discounted admission.

1892 Bishop’s Palace: Free admission SATURDAY ONLY – Tour one of the island’s most popular mansions built of stone and steel, designed by Nicholas Clayton, Galveston’s premier Victorian-era architect.

The Bryan Museum: Buy one, get one free admission – Visit one of the world’s largest collections of historical artifacts, documents and artwork relating to Texas and the American West.

Galveston Arts Center: Free admission – Explore the Galveston Arts Center – an independent nonprofit organization and art museum that presents pacesetting contemporary art in a historic building on The Strand.

Galveston Children’s Museum: Buy one, get one free admission – Explore the Galveston Children’s Museum – a unique, hands-on environment where children explore, investigate, create, and discover.

Galveston Naval Museum: Buy one, get one free admission – Experience a WWII submarine, the USS Cavalla, and the WWII destroyer escort, the USS Stewart – one of only two escorts remaining in the United States.

Galveston Railroad Museum: Buy one, get one free admission – Explore locomotive history with one of the largest restored railroad collections in the United States.

The Grand 1894 Opera House: Free tours Saturday, 9 am – 5 pm & Sunday, Noon – 5 pm – Tour the official opera house of Texas, which is one of the few remaining theatres of its era and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

1895 Moody Mansion: Buy one, get one free admission – 
View opulent decor and majestic architecture on a self-paced audio tour of this 28,000-square-foot treasure from the late 1800s. Moody Mansion is celebrating its 125th anniversary in 2020, with special exhibits, events and programs scheduled throughout the year.

Ocean Star Offshore Drilling Rig and Museum: Buy one, get one free admission – Take a leisurely, self-guided tour through the retired Ocean Star jack-up rig which now serves as a museum and educational facility. From geological exploration to drilling, to oil and gas production, you will see offshore drilling equipment, exhibits and videos on three levels of this refurbished offshore drilling rig.

Rosenberg Library: Free admission (CLOSED SUNDAYS) – 
Come and explore the oldest public library in Texas in continuous operation. Sneak peek the restoration work in the historic fourth-floor gallery space. Color your favorite library scene at giant coloring page stations. Place yourself in historic Galveston images featuring bathing beauties, the 1900 Storm, and more.

Texas City Museum: $2 off admission up to four people – Discover this regional history museum featuring artifacts from the USS Westfield (including a real Civil War cannon), exhibits on the founding of Texas City and the 1947 Disaster, Children’s Discovery Room and model train layouts.

January 25th-February 9th: 2020 Galveston Restaurant Week – The ninth annual Galveston.com & Company Galveston Restaurant Week brings Galveston Island’s vibrant food scene to life for two full weeks of delicious dining. Galveston is home to the finest Gulf Coast seafood and some of Texas’s most delectable restaurants. And visitors to Galveston Restaurant Week will enjoy these delightful and delicious eateries and more for prix-fixe lunch and/or dinner menus – at attractive price points you’re sure to savor! And while your taste buds are celebrating delicious, you can put the guilt aside knowing that your participation in Restaurant Week is helping others. This year, Galveston Restaurant Week eatery has committed to help Access Care of Coastal Texas provide weekly lunches to its clients. These lunches provide nutrition for persons with HIV or AIDS. Participating in Galveston Restaurant Week is easy! No tickets or passes are required! Food lovers may simply dine out at as many participating restaurants as they like during Galveston Restaurant Week. Two and/or 3-course dinners will be priced between $20-$35; and 2-course lunches, breakfasts, & brunches will cost between $10-$20. Mardi Gras! Galveston

If you’re looking for a unique Mardi Gras experience in 2020, grab some beads and hit the beach.

Mardi Gras! Galveston, the third largest Mardi Gras celebration in the United States, offers the unique chance to experience sand between your toes and gorgeous beach sunsets while taking in the revelry and lavish parades known to dominate Galveston Island during carnival season.

The island’s 109th Mardi Gras celebration, to be held February 14 – Fat Tuesday, February 25 is expected to draw more than 350,000 attendees for 30+ concerts, parades, balcony parties and several elegant balls.

About Mardi Gras! Galveston
Mardi Gras, the traditional festival of feasting and merrymaking that precedes the season of Lent, was first publicly observed on Galveston Island in 1867. Following a sabbatical imposed in 1941 by war and challenging times, Mardi Gras! Galveston was revived in 1985 by Galveston-born preservationist and developer George P. Mitchell. The largest celebration of its kind in Texas and the third largest in the nation, Mardi Gras! Mardi Gras! Galveston, the third largest Mardi Gras celebration in the United States, offers the unique chance to experience sand between your toes and gorgeous beach sunsets while taking in the revelry and lavish parades known to dominate Galveston Island during carnival season.

The island’s 109th Mardi Gras celebration, to be held February 14 – Fat Tuesday, February 25 is expected to draw more than 350,000 attendees for 30+ concerts, parades, balcony parties and several elegant balls.

About Mardi Gras! Galveston
Mardi Gras, the traditional festival of feasting and merrymaking that precedes the season of Lent, was first publicly observed on Galveston Island in 1867. Following a sabbatical imposed in 1941 by war and challenging times, Mardi Gras! Galveston was revived in 1985 by Galveston-born preservationist and developer George P. Mitchell. Presented by The Tremont House, Hotel Galvez, and Mitchell Historic Properties.  Award ceremony will be held in front of the Tremont House at 5:30pm followed by a cocktail reception and the George P. Mitchell Mardi Gras Parade.

The George P. Mitchell Parade will begin at 7:00pm from The Tremont House with festive floats parading through the Historic Strand District on the kick off night of Mardi Gras! Galveston Friday, February 14, 2020.

Twirl your way through the streets of the Downtown Entertainment district Friday, February 14, 2020 for the 10th Annual Funky Uptown Umbrella Brigade. This FREE event offers families, friends, corporate groups, organizations and individuals a chance to do a little dance, have a lot of fun and get down tonight.  Sponsored by The Galveston County Daily News.

Check in the night of the parade and we will assign you and your team a number if you would like to enter the contest.

The Who, What, Where, When…..

Please enter at 22nd and Mechanic (Only) gates open at 5:00 PM. You will only receive FREE entrance at the 22nd & Mechanic gate. Captains check in at the front of the Electric Stage and we will give you your large group number.

No wagons, strollers or coolers please

Parade line up will begin at 6:30 PM

Parade will start at 8:30 PM

For groups being judged. Judging will take place at 23rd & Strand, judges will be on the balcony at the corner of 23rd & Strand

The Hokey Pokey will be danced in front of The Tremont House.

Captains once the parade is over please drop off your numbers behind the ticket booth at 23rd & Mechanic this is where we will give the winning Krewe their 30 Balcony Party Tickets for having the best theme & costumes.

The parade begins on Strand Street at 20th Street, proceeds west on Strand Street to 25th Street, travels south on 25th Street to Ship’s Mechanic Row, then proceeds east along Ship’s Mechanic Row to 20th Street, and north along 20th Street to Strand Street.
