Saturday, August 24th (3-5pm): “Oleanders in June” by Whitney Vandiver @ Galveston Bookshop
Aug 24 @ 3:00 pm – 5:00 pm

Galveston Bookshop is located Downtown Galveston at 317 23rd Street, Galveston. For more info call (409)750-8200 or go to galvestonbookshop.com.

Galveston Bookshop will host a book signing for author Whitney Vandiver with her new historical novel of Galveston.

The setting is Galveston in 1900. A year of training in the Signal Corps did nothing to prepare Alfred Ridgeway for his new post with the U.S. Weather Bureau on the edge of the Texas gulf. Alfred finds himself thrust into the strained relationship of renowned climatologist Isaac Cline and his assisting brother, Joseph. With rising tensions in the office, Alfred begins to expand life beyond his duties at the bureau and soon meets the extraordinary Florence Keller. As the summer heats up, the bureau cuts ties with a valuable source of information, leaving the Galveston Weather Office blind during the peak of hurricane season. When a telegram warns of a storm in the gulf, Alfred will have to choose between following protocol or trusting his instincts.

Whitney Vandiver is an avid reader who wrote her first story when she was eight years old. She is now a bibliophile, with more books than shelves, who writes historical fiction and mysteries. She resides in Pearland, Texas with her spouse and cat.

ArtWalk feat. Nikki Thompson @ Proletariat Gallery and Public House
Aug 24 @ 6:00 pm – 11:00 pm

Join us for ArtWalk as we feature the sculptural work of Galveston artist, Nikki Thompson.

‘This latest series relates to the process of finding oneself. The figures relate to the journey I have been on throughout my life and the continuing journey of self discovery. It can often feel like you are naked in front of the world when opening yourself up and that is what I try to capture…the feeling of raw emotion and exposure…the strength that it takes to bare it all to be true to oneself. ‘

*** ArtWalk is a neighborhood event in Galveston’s historic Cultural Arts District where galleries, boutique shops, bars, restaurants, and other local businesses invite patrons for an evening of art, entertainment, and socializing.

ArtWalk in Galveston @ Galveston Arts Center
Aug 24 @ 6:00 pm – 10:00 pm

For over 25 years, the Galveston Arts Center has organized ArtWalk on eight Saturday evenings each year in the heart of Galveston’s historic district. ArtWalk takes place inside existing art galleries (both commercial and non-profit) and other spaces such as cafes and shops that showcase rotating art exhibits.

One of the Galveston Arts Center’s largest programs, ArtWalk supports our arts community and connects a diverse assortment of local places to see, learn about and purchase original art.
