Intro to Painting, Watercolors & Seaglass Classes

November 10th (12 noon-4pm): Encaustic Painting Intro Class – Wanna play with fire?  Let’s fire it up with artist Stacy Gresell and learn encaustic painting. Come to join for this introductory class where you can learn to paint with melted beeswax firing every layer with a torch. This workshop is for beginners and is open to all skill levels. No art experience necessary. Materials explored are substrates, paint, and tools, as well a basic application technique such as the base layer, cold wax application, and blended. You will also learn some advanced techniques as well including an incorporation of images (burnished and embedded), reductions, and various forms of encaustic intarsia. Class cost is $120 per person plus $30 for supplies. You will leave with your practice board and a finished painting (both will be 8×8) as well as some beginner tools. This will be held at Affaire d’Art, 2227 Postoffice St., Downtown Galveston. Register at Participants should bring a notebook for sketches and notes, images they want to work with (those from a printer should be laser, not inkjet), and a soup spoon.

November 10th and 11th (9am-5pm): Plein Air Workshop with Liz Bonham – Paint Galveston’s great outdoors – from beaches to bays, a working port to historic homes – you will find plenty to dip your paintbrush in on the Island. These one day or two-day workshops will be led by Liz Bonham who will give you her undivided attention. The workshop includes a daily demo by Liz, one on one assistance, and a daily afternoon group critique. See, think and learn the techniques and useful hints for painting outdoors. November 11th (10am-3pm): Sea Glass Seminar – Come out to learn more about sea glass at The National Hotel Artist Lofts, 2221 Market St., #305, Downtown Galveston. You will go to a hunting ground and look for sea glass, then have lunch, then back to learn more about the sea glass that you found, look at other examples, and learn to drill sea glass. November 11th (1:30-3:30pm): Who was the “Kissing Sailor in Times Square on August 14, 1945?” –  Join on Veterans Day to honor our WWII veterans and learn about America’s celebration at the end of the war nears. G.Lee Gallery invites you to a lecture by Rene’ Palmer Armstrong, World War II expert and who was the Kissing Sailor’s business agent. While doing research on her book, “Wings and a Ring,” about a WWII B-25 bomber pilot in the jungles of New Guinea, Glenn McDuffie – the kissing sailor – entered her life. She learned first-hand the back story – why the kiss happened, details about the individuals and the circumstances that brought them together. Find out the amazing true-life story of the real Kissing Sailor. Rene’ will share the photos that were taken that day by two different photographers – and you just thought there were only one photo and one photographer! She will discuss photographic details and the verification process used by the Guinness Book of Record’s and Houston Police Department’s forensic artist. November 24th (12 noon-4pm): Tea Time Watercolor Workshop – Looking for something fun to do while learning how to watercolor? Come to Sharon Hendry Downtown Galveston Studio for Tea And Teacup Watercolor Painting. No art experience is necessary. This is an afternoon of relaxation and creativity where you will be sketching simple teacup designs and dipping paintbrushes in vibrant colors to create unique watercolor art while enjoying herbal tea.
