To be held at Jimmy’s On The Pier, 9001 Seawall Blvd., the 2019 La Izquierda is an annual surf and music festival dedicated to enriching and uniting communities of Galveston, the Gulf Coast and beyond through a good old fashioned surf competition and fundraiser for the Surfrider Foundation’s Galveston Chapter.
The main event is the Surf Contest, which is a classic longboard showdown at a classic Galveston surf spot, the old 91st Street Pier. There is a $35 entry fee to compete, $10 for Groms (12 & under), and includes t-shirt, commemorative La Izquierda beer glass, and 12 beer tickets. There is an additional $30 fee to enter Open Division. The Surf Competition starts at 10am. There will also be a fun Night Surf event starting at 9pm.
Local and touring bands and artists come from near and far to celebrate surf culture and the preservation of our natural waters and beach habitat with groovy tunes. Featured this year will be Los Skarnales, Robert Kuhn, Dem, Let Me Remember, India Tigers in Texas, Mas Pulpo, Rich Otul, New Mexico Playboys, Indaskies, Arthur Yoria, Idiginis, Gabe Wooten, Christina Urquieta of Metanoia, La Izquierda MC, Soulfiya and more. Music will be going on all day.
Local breweries offer their craft brews to the cause and will compete for the most beers sold. The Craft Beer Tasting will be 12 noon-4pm. Simply purchase a commemorative La Izquierda glass and 12 beer tasting tickets for $25. Beer ticket includes general admission. 1 ticket gets you a 2 oz. sample, 5 tickets for a full canned beer. Additional tickets are available for $1.
Participating breweries are Galveston Island Brewing, 8th Wonder Brewery, Saint Arnold, Spindletap Brewery, Back Pew Brewing, Devil & The Deep Brewery, Texas Beer Refinery, Karbach Brewing, Southern Star, and Sweet Water Brewing.
La Izquierda is open to the public and free to attend.

It’s beginning to feel like summer, so why not spend a few hours at the park? Saengerfest Park, located in the heart of Downtown Galveston, is a great place to find free family-friendly fun.
Saengerfest Park is a small, square park located on the corner of 23rd St. and The Strand in Galveston’s Historic Strand District. Saengerfest Park is known for having a large, playable chess set, a large compass that can be used as a seat, a colorful iconic Galveston wall mural, a huge beach chair offering photo opportunities, wooden benches, an old-fashioned London-style phone booth, and a stage used for festivals, movies, and concerts.
Visitors and residents are invited to enjoy free movies the first Saturday of each month beginning just after dusk. Moviegoers are encouraged to set up a blanket or chair. Scheduled movies are:

- July 6th: “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle”

Music Nite on The Strand takes place on the second Saturday of each month, 6-9pm. These free concerts are a great family-fun event. Dancing is highly encouraged. Concerts scheduled are:

Come out for this fun event benefiting Galveston Island Humane Society. This is event #3 in the Run in Texas 5K 6-Pack Series. It is walker friendly and starts and finishes at Galveston Island Brewing Company. Run a well supported, well-staffed 5K on a fast and flat course on the Seawall beside the Gulf of Mexico. There will be a post-race party with food trucks, and four 8-ounce beer tastings in finisher glass are included. All runners will receive a finisher pint glass and tech shirt.
