It’s beginning to feel like summer, so why not spend a few hours at the park? Saengerfest Park, located in the heart of Downtown Galveston, is a great place to find free family-friendly fun.
Saengerfest Park is a small, square park located on the corner of 23rd St. and The Strand in Galveston’s Historic Strand District. Saengerfest Park is known for having a large, playable chess set, a large compass that can be used as a seat, a colorful iconic Galveston wall mural, a huge beach chair offering photo opportunities, wooden benches, an old-fashioned London-style phone booth, and a stage used for festivals, movies, and concerts.
Visitors and residents are invited to enjoy free movies the first Saturday of each month beginning just after dusk. Moviegoers are encouraged to set up a blanket or chair. Scheduled movies are:
- May 4th: “A Wrinkle in Time” (2018)
- June 1st: “Willie Wonka & The Chocolate Factory” (1971)
- July 6th: “Jumanji: Welcome to the Jungle”
- August 3rd: “Ralph Breaks the Internet” (2018)
- September 7th: “Tommy Boy” (1995)
- October 5th: “Goosebumps” (2015)
Music Nite on The Strand takes place on the second Saturday of each month, 6-9pm. These free concerts are a great family-fun event. Dancing is highly encouraged. Concerts scheduled are:
- May 11th: Sonic Seduction (Radio hits)
- June 8th: John Evans Band (Rock, Country, Blues)
- July 13th: Sarah Grace and the Soul (Blues, R&B)
- August 10th: Donovan Keith (Soul)
- September 14th: Fab Five (Beatles Tribute)
- October 12th: 30i (Rock)

Come out for this fun event benefiting Galveston Island Humane Society. This is event #3 in the Run in Texas 5K 6-Pack Series. It is walker friendly and starts and finishes at Galveston Island Brewing Company. Run a well supported, well-staffed 5K on a fast and flat course on the Seawall beside the Gulf of Mexico. There will be a post-race party with food trucks, and four 8-ounce beer tastings in finisher glass are included. All runners will receive a finisher pint glass and tech shirt. May 7th (5:30-7pm): Salty Cuts – Clear your evening if you want to help with the next Salty Culture ‘Salty Cuts’ – free haircuts to our less fortunate friends. A simple hair cut makes people feel like a million bucks! But honestly, you will get way more out of the evening than our friends ever will. They are currently seeking stylists. They are also in need of donated snacks and volunteers to hand out swag bags and hang with people outside on the balcony for the pre-party before the haircut party, sweepers, free smiles, and high-fives! Each stylist will be assigned a table that evening and they will advertise your salon the week leading up to the event. This will be held at Salvation Army Galveston, 601 51st St., Galveston.
The Kitchen Chick, Downtown Galveston’s charming boutique kitchen shop, offers specialty gourmet kitchen wares and accessories, plus a full schedule of enticing cooking classes. Now in its new location at 2402 Market St., there’s a lot going on in the kitchen.

Run wild with the Yaga’s Children’s Fund Inc. on Saturday, May 11th along the Galveston Seawall. This family-friendly walk/run is a non-competitive event for “Wild Things” of all ages before they head down to Pier 21 for some delicious wild game and free-flowing beverages. Your entry fee includes t-shirt, souvenir event koozie, and a dinner ticket for the 23rd Annual World Wild Game and BBQ Cook-off. Not only is this a great deal, by participating you will help support the moral, psychological, intellectual, vocational and physical development of Galveston County’s Children! In the course of a project on German American Friendship organized by Fulbright, a German-American exchange association, this is an evening about cultural exchange within the surf community.
The event starts at 7pm with the screening of ‘Headache’ a movie made by German surfers on an adventure through the cold waters of Germany, Iceland, Scotland, and Denmark.
Afterwards, Simone Schoemig, a surfer from Germany, will speak about how a surf culture emerged in a country that hardly has any consistent breaks.
Some snacks and beer will be provided!

Known today as a colorful resort destination featuring family-friendly entertainment and a thriving arts district, Galveston was once notorious for its flourishing vice economy of illegal liquor and gambling and an infamous red light district called simply, “The Line.”
This unassuming five blocks of Postoffice Street came to life every night and remained a stubborn mainstay of the island cityscape for nearly seventy years. In the late 1950s, the era was known as the “Free State of Galveston” finally came to an end, and today, almost all that remains of its history has been sensationalized and marginalized.
Galveston was more than just a city of “gangsters” and lewd women, and Kimber Fountain pursues the authentic, sequestered story of women who wanted to make their own rules and the city that wanted to let them.
Tours are every Wednesday-Saturday starting at 7pm. Tickets are $25 per person and can be purchased online at redlightdistricttoursofgalveston.com in advance or at the start of the tour (cash only).
Reservations are required for cash/onsite tickets, and both online ticket purchases and cash reservations must be made by 5pm the day of the tour.

The route begins at Island Bicycle Company and will go along the Seawall and then Riders Will head down to the scenic Galveston Historic Downtown and over to pier 21.
Please note that a HEADLIGHT, RED TAIL LIGHT, and a red rear reflector are required for this ride. Riders need to be safe! Follow all traffic laws. Do not run Red Lights. BEWARE OF THE TROLLEY TRACKS DOWNTOWN. Cross the tracks as close to perpendicular as you can!
