Houston’s premiere auditioned chorus for children will hold its 26th annual “Summer Music Funshop” in Galveston this coming July 22nd-28th.
This is an annual service project for the Houston Children’s Chorus. Houston kids pay their way to spend one week in Galveston working side-by-side with Galveston children in a 5-day summer day camp. The daily workshops take place at Garten Verein in Kempner Park. The workshop culminates in a summer pops concert performed by all of the children at The Grand 1894 Opera House.
The fee for Galveston children is $25. This covers lunch each day, a performance t-shirt, and two tickets to the final concert. The theme for this year’s workshop is “A Rootin’ Tootin’ Boot Scootin’ Salute To Texas!” Fun choreography, beautiful children’s voices, and a pit band have made this annual concert a unique summer pops concert on the Island.
Children who have completed grades 3 through 8 are eligible to attend. Advance registration is required. Registration deadline is July 1st. Visit the Chorus’ website at houstonchildren.org for registration information. You may also email the Chorus at info@houstonchildren.org or call (713)650-3800.
Also joining the Houston & Galveston children will be 30 children from Taiwan. The Houston Children’s Chorus will be featured in concert during the week at Sacred Heart Church, St. Patrick’s Church, Moody Church, The Meridian, and Gulf Breeze.
The Houston Children’s Chorus is celebrating its 30th year. Over 6,000 children have participated in Chorus programs since 1989. These talented children perform over 45 concerts per year. They have performed for the president of the U.S. on 32 occasions. They were featured in the opening ceremonies of the Super Bowl.
Stephen Roddy is the Founder & Director of the Chorus. Guest choreographer is Stevie Rivers Rawlings. The Summer Music Funshop is supported by grants from The Texas Commission on the Arts, Moody Methodist P.E.F., Dr. Leon Bromberg Trust, Starlight Education Foundation (Taiwan), Kinder Morgan Foundation, Landry’s, and other donors.
