It is estimated that an attempt is made every 38 seconds, with over one million people attempting suicide annually. Suicide is the 2nd leading cause of death for ages 1-44 and the 5th leading cause of death in the U.S. among adults 44-59. Veterans comprise 18% of all suicides! A survey of more than 4,000 first responders found that 6.6 percent had attempted suicide, which is more than 10 times the rate in the general population! This is a public health issue that does not discriminate by age, gender, ethnicity, or socio-economic status. RIDE to save lives!RIDE TO RAISE FUNDSAFSP funds research aimed at improving our understanding of suicide and ways to prevent it as well as educational programs to increase awareness about prevention, warning signs and the psychiatric illnesses that can lead to suicide!RIDE TO SAVE LIVESSuicide is a national health problem that takes an enormous toll on family, friends, co-workers, and the entire community. AFSP provides opportunities for those lives that have been touched by mental illness and suicide to get involved through a wide variety of educational, outreach, awareness, advocacy and fundraising programs.
