August 4th (2-4pm): Pushing the Limits: Astronauts, Medicine & Space Travel – In the early years of space travel, much was unknown! Would the human body simply implode in space? Would unknown viruses or germs decimate humankind? These questions and more were very valid concerns as we ventured where people had not gone before. Buckle up and get ready for stories from one of NASA’s premier medical research scientists – a Texan who spent his career exploring life on the edge of the unknown. The speaker, Dr. John Charles, has been fascinated with space travel since he was a child imitating John Glenn in a dusty playground. His long career at The Johnson Space Center focused on research and exploration of the effects of weightlessness on the human body. He also served in the prestigious position of Mission Scientist for NASA research on American astronauts on Mir, Space Shuttle Columbia’s last mission, and most significantly on his boyhood hero John Glenn’s Space Shuttle flight. The Bryan Museum is located in the historic Galveston Orphans Home at 1315 21st St. in Galveston.
Tours are given (no reservations needed) at 11:30am and 2:30pm. Tickets are $14 for adults, $12 for seniors and military, $10 for students with valid ID, $5 for children 6-12, and children under 6 are free.
