Mardi Gras Galveston 2021 EVENTS: Very Different, Still Fun, Alternatives Galore

Mardi Gras! Galveston, the third largest Mardi Gras celebration in the United States, normally offers the unique chance to experience sand between your toes and gorgeous beach sunsets while taking in the revelry and lavish parades known to dominate Galveston Island during carnival season.

And it’s official: Galveston has canceled the island’s annual Mardi Gras celebration due to the coronavirus pandemic.

A unanimous vote by the City Council sealed the fate of the fête, scheduled for Feb. 5 through 16. The event had appeared unlikely to occur for weeks with Mardi Gras Krewes canceling large parades, a main part of the event, and other organizers calling off balls, galas and gatherings.

Mayor Craig Brown said officials are planning to look next month at contracts for 2022 for the city-sponsored downtown celebration that’s part of the festival.

Most Mardi Gras! Galveston events – parades, concerts, and parties – have been canceled. That doesn’t mean you can’t head to the island and participate in some alternative events and activities. Smaller gatherings and celebrations will take place such as these:
