October 12th: Galveston Walk to End Alzheimer’s – Held annually in more than 600 communities nationwide, the Alzheimer’s Association Walk to End Alzheimer’s® is the world’s largest event to raise awareness and funds for Alzheimer’s care, support, and research. This inspiring event calls on participants of all ages and abilities to reclaim the future for millions. The walk will take place 8am-12 noon at Stewart Beach Park, 201 Seawall Blvd. For more info and to register go to act.alz.org.

October 5th, 12th, 19th, 26th, November 2nd, 9th, 16th, 23rd, 30th (10am): Prairie Walk – Learn about the coastal prairie on a guided walk. The new Prairie Adventure will meet in the Galveston Island State Park (Park) Nature Center. Visitors will be introduced to the Park, the exhibits in the Nature Center and the Coastal Prairie. Visitors will then follow a guide to the parking area at the Clapper Rail Trail and then learn about the wonders of the Bay and Coastal Prairie including a little about the bay and wetlands, the flora and fauna and prairie restoration efforts in the Park. The Prairie Adventure is free, but visitors will need to have paid the Park admission fee.

Galveston Island State Park is located on the west end of the island at 14901 FM 3005, Galveston. For more info call (409)737-1222 or go to tpwd.state.tx.us/state-parks/galveston-island. The beachside of Galveston State Park (everything south of FM 3005) is closed as renovations take place. The side facing the bay will remain open. This closing is expected to last for about three years.

Our 3rd annual Sugar Skull ArtWalk Party is coming up! So Excited!!! The night of we will have your requested project as well as complimentary snacks ( like the chocolate fountain ;) and beverages. Although we will have lots of snacks, sangria and other yummies, you are more than welcome to bring your own snacks and beverages the night of. Every Thursday 3-6pm and Sunday 9am-12 noon (note new summer hours), Galveston’s Own Farmers Market is held at The Bryan Museum Gardens, located at 1315 21st St. Come to the beautiful Conservatory and botanical gardens to relax and enjoy time and conversation with friends, family, and museum staff while shopping for locally grown produce, prepared foods, and edible farm products, plus live music, yoga, massage, crafting and Kids Corner! 

The Thursday market features all of the perks that you’ve come to expect at the market plus the added charms of the Bryan Museum’s “Wine at the Bryan” weekly event. The Sunday market also features wonderful goods and the charm of Bryan’s courtyard. It is always free to browse and most events are FREE to participate.

• FREE recycling with Keepin’ It Green: Every week, they accept your clean, rinsed recyclable plastics, glass, aluminum and paper/cardboard. KIG comes to pick it up every week aftermarket.

GOFM is always “BYOC” – bring your own cup. They have eliminated single-use cups for the free Sunday morning coffee station and Thursday water station. Support the initiative by cleaning out your cupboards and donating unwanted mugs to market for others to use.

Every Sunday (10am): Yoga Classes – These classes are led by local yoga teachers. All classes are free to attend.

October 13th: Drag Queen Story Hour – Enjoy stories read by Drag Queens Kymber Devine and Athena Sapphire plus enter for book giveaways every hour!

Every Third Thursday (3-6pm): Thirsty Thursdays is held every 3rd Thursday wherein Galveston Island Brewing donates beers first-come, first-serve to market customers! You can shop, sip and stroll the market while exploring the museum grounds and buying local foods.

Galveston’s Own Farmers Market operates 2 markets every week, Thursdays & Sundays.

*Products typically available include: kombucha, fresh bread, hand-roasted coffee, teas/salves/tinctures, olive oil, baked goods, salsa, jams, fresh eggs & meats and fresh produce. All GOFM markets utilize only LOCAL vendors selling foods they grow or make themselves, which means at certain times of year we have very little produce because our local farmers have very little harvest (ie if it has rained a great deal, or the middle of summer, immediately after several days of freeze, etc.)

August 20th, September 17th (12 noon): Learn to Cook with WIC – This free cooking class is led by Chef Mary Bass. Students can eat a fresh meal for lunch, gain cooking knowledge, and create a recipe based on average monthly WIC benefits. RSVP to (409)938-7221. You can receive $30 of FREE fruits, vegetables, and plants from local farmers at the weekly markets. Vouchers are good until Halloween and can only be distributed one per year. You must bring your WIC “Shopping List” (the paper printout you get at the clinic) in order to receive the vouchers.

October 19th: The Toughest 10K Galveston – This run is part of The Texas Bridge Series. Run the Kemah Bridge in September, the Galveston Causeway in October, and the Fred Hartman Bridge in November to get a commemorative special medal. October 18th-19th (varies): Genteel Junque – An array of antiques, furniture, and home accessories will be available for sale at Galveston Historical Foundation’s annual sale of donated items. The sale will emphasize high-quality antiques, furniture, and art in good condition. A preview evening with light refreshments will be held on Friday, October 18th, 6-8pm, with complimentary admission to GHF members. Admission is free on Saturday, October 19th and will be open 8am-4pm. Donations of Victorian to Mid-Century Modern furniture or home goods can be made by calling (409)765-3457 or email nick.barbee@galvestonhistory.org. Proceeds from the sales of items benefit Galveston Historical Foundation.
