Join us for a film screening and song swap in the 1920 City National Bank Building this Labor Day weekend!
This year’s program brings awareness to the workers who put food on our Gulf Coast tables.
The event kicks off with the film FRUITS OF LABOR at 5:30 p.m. and culminates with a concert by singer/songwriters Drew Kennedy and Katie Rushing at 7 p.m.
Craft beer courtesy of Saint Arnold Brewing Company will be available for donation.

Sunday @ 10 a.m. – Gulf Coast Sugar vs. Houston Toros at Hooper Field (3130 83rd Street). $10 suggested donation with proceeds benefiting the Docside Clinic.Sunday @ 3 p.m. – Player Meet & Greet at Daiquiri Time Out. The Sugar’s favorite island cocktail bar is turning on the neon a little early for us. Raise a glass to your favorite team. Player autographs available upon request.
Sunday @ 5:30 p.m. – Fruits of Labor film screening followed by a song swap with Drew Kennedy and Katie Rushing Music at 7 p.m. Held at Galveston Historical Foundation‘s 1920 City National Bank Building, 2219 Market, the event is presented by UTHealth’s PEOPLE Centered Lab. PLAY BALL!Located in the Central Business District at 2219 Market, the City National Bank building is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (1984) and recognized as one of the city’s most important early 20th-century buildings.
It was gifted to the Galveston Historical Foundation in 2020 and has been featured on the Galveston Historic Homes Tour.

ABOUT FRUITS OF LABOR | A Mexican-American teenager dreams of graduating high school, when increased ICE raids in her community threaten to separate her family and force her to become the breadwinner for her family. She works long days in the strawberry fields and the night shift at a food processing factory. Set in an agricultural town on the central coast of California, FRUITS OF LABOR is a coming of age story about an American teenager traversing the seen and unseen forces that keep her family trapped in poverty. A lyrical meditation on adolescence, nature and ancestral forces, the film asks, what does it mean to come into one’s power as a working young woman of color in the wealthiest nation in the world?
ABOUT DREW KENNEDY | Kennedy has long-since mastered the art of literary lines that evoke sharp images and strong emotions. As he sings, “The sky’s as wide as a smile on a waitress / at a late night, roadside cafe outside of Pecos” to kick off “Open Road,” West Texas skylines and the people who dot them are inimitably captured. All brimming toe-tapping keys and crisp cymbal crashes, “24 Hours in New York City” traces the exhilaration and possibility of young love, while “House” describes a home’s dismantling to heartbreaking perfection. Moody “Cream and Sugar” and driving “Jackson” are both straight-ahead pop smashes, and Kennedy’s vocals have never sounded better. ABOUT KATIE RUSHING | Katie Rushing is a singer-songwriter. Her new album, ‘Sparrow’ includes original songs recorded at Beebe Gunn Studio in Houston, Texas.
“Sparrow is a collection of songs that are non-fictional and fictional. They are story based, they are reality based. They are based on actual events as well as on feelings and ideas alone. Some of the words evolved from a tune and some of the tunes arrived after the story was written. The most beautiful thing music does is it takes flight and when it lands in the presence of someone else it creates a stir.
