Pizza is Our Favorite Food Group, No Really!

Pizza. The one food that basically everyone on earth can agree is simply the best. It’s definitely better than all the rest and at times, it’s simply what we crave. I mean, what could be better than a Friday night at home with a big yummy pizza, a movie and all your friends and family around? Or going out for pizza after a concert or game, everyone piled around a table, sharing pizzas, toasting friends, and enjoying your good times while devouring the piles of wonderful cheesy goodness. Nothing. That is the recipe for a perfect evening for almost everyone.

Recently, we conducted a very informal poll on our Facebook page (@GalvestonIslandGuide) about your “Favorite Pizza on the Island.” We received a lot of favorites, several funny comments, and even specific pizza suggestions from different places. Here are the results:

Mama Teresa’s Flying Pizza – Overall everyone’s #1 on the poll was Mama Teresa’s, located Downtown at 416 21st St. They host a nice variety of pizzas along with the ability to customize any pie, but overall the Mama Teresa Supreme won the poll as favorite, only coming in a close second to the Greek pizza. These are available in calzones too, but that is another topic for another day. Mama offers a few vegetarian and gluten options too.

Jack’s Pub on Postoffice – A local’s favorite hang out, Jack’s pizza came in a very close second place for our “Favorite Pizza on the Island” poll. Jack’s offers regular crust and Extra Extra Thin pizzas which all come in either quarter, half size, or full size of a 12” or 16” pizza. You can customize the pizzas to your liking with Canadian bacon, hamburger, pepperoni, jalapenos, onions, tomatoes, mushrooms, or pineapple. On Wednesdays, Jack offers a 1-topping pizza for $8.75! Jack’s Pub on Postoffice is located at 2406 Postoffice, Downtown Galveston. They also cut the pizzas into small slices so it’s a great way to share with your friends…but only if you want too!

Sharky’s Tavern – You will find great pizza made in a wood-fired oven here! The Sailor Sandwich is actually a pizza with ground beef, mozzarella, cheddar, red onion, diced tomatoes and a steak sauce blend. It is a fan favorite as well as the Big Fred made with Sharky’s special sausage blend, pepperonis, and two kinds of cheese, all topped with jalapenos! If you are in the mood for something a little different, try The Yardie – shredded Jamaican jerk chicken and mozzarella all piled high and melted into a pie. They also have an Apple Crisp dessert pizza. Sharky’s Tavern is located at the corner of Postoffice and 25th St. in Downtown Galveston.

Murphy’s Irish Pub – A longtime locals favorite pub, Murphy’s is also famous for its homemade pizzas – including the mouthwatering “White Pizza” with garlic butter, spinach, and feta. Murphy’s has lots of seating – some open for larger groups and others tucked away for privacy and conversation. At Murphy’s, the beer is always cold and the pizzas are great. Murphy’s Irish pub is located at 213 22nd St in Downtown Galveston.

Gypsy Joynt – Voted Galveston Island’s Restaurant of the Year in 2017, The Gypsy Joynt is a unique blend of all things cool – including their heavenly pizzas. A fan favorite is the “What Duff?” which comes with an olive oil base, mozzarella, spinach, caramelized onions, Gypsy’s legendary bacon jam, and  yunioshi sauce (the same sauce they put on their fried brussel sprouts), then if all that was not enough, they layer on shrimp and fresh strawberries! Yes, you read that right – it’s a heavenly concoction as unique and creative as this restaurant. The pizza “Garbage” came in a close second as a favorite which is like a supreme style pizza that comes with a marinara base, then is piled high with pepperoni, sausage, ham, bacon, mushrooms, green peppers, onions, black olives, and tomatoes. They have several vegetarian options too and of course, you can build your own pizza however you can dream up. All pizzas come in only one size, 12”. Gypsy Joynt is located at 2711 Market St., Downtown Galveston. A pro’s tip – don’t waste any time thinking about whether you are going to share the pizza with anyone. Take our advice, you are not.

Stay tuned to our Facebook page for our next fan’s favorite poll – “Dessert, Island Style” starting June 1st.
